Mission definition

  • Project description and mission objectives written down
  • Special operational considerations noted
  • Timeline agreed: earliest deployment, latest recovery
  • Operational risk assessment completed and summarized
  • Major show-stoppers assessed, with a plan B for each
  • Permits identified and obtained (if any)

Environment

  • Expected currents in the operating area characterized  can the glider stem them? (~40 cm/s depth-averaged is the practical limit)
  • Depth range of the area mapped; bathymetry maps prepared if needed
  • Density/stratification range checked against the available VBD budget
  • Ice climatology / ice maps reviewed (high-latitude missions)

Roles & communications

  • Client point of contact
  • Operations manager / account rep
  • Data QC engineer
  • Project & field coordinator
  • Deployment/recovery lead(s) with contact info
  • Pilot(s) with contact info
  • Communication channels agreed for deployment, piloting, and recovery

Sensors & sampling

  • Installed sensors listed with serial numbers and calibration dates
  • Acquisition needs per sensor defined  depth ranges, sampling frequency — becomes the science / scicon.sch file

Endurance & logistics

  • Endurance calculation done for the planned sampling and dive depth
  • Deployment and recovery vessel(s) identified
  • Emergency recovery option identified
